En l'an 2654, de redoutables créatures mi-hommes, mi-félins attaquent le quartier général de la confédération terrienne et s'emparent du système central de navigation et des voies d'accès directes à la Terre. L'amiral Tolwyn assiste impuissant à cette attaque surprise, son vaisseau de combat étant stationné à des années-lumière du drame. Il alerte alors le lieutenant Christopher Blair à bord du navire marchand "Diligent", pilote par Paladin, un aventurier qui connaît la carte de l'univers comme sa poche. Lui seul est capable de trouver un raccourci dans l'espace-temps.
